This week, giant NFT-focused company Animoca Brands restated its support for Sky Mavis, the group behind Axie Infinity. The statement comes shortly after the game’s Ronin Network hacking incident affected thousands of players.
While part of the NFT community was horrified by the breach, Animoca Brands is focusing on the project’s future endeavors. In fact, the two teams go back a long way – and their partnership will likely evolve in 2022 too.
Animoca Brands, supporting Axie Infinity more than ever
Surprisingly, Animoca Brands has been investing in Sky Mavis since 2019. At the time, few would’ve guessed that Axie Infinity would become one of the most successful P2E NFT-powered games of all time. Accordingly, the two founding teams share many passions and ambitions, starting with their drive for innovation.
“Sky Mavis is one of the strongest and most dedicated builders in the crypto space,” Animoca Brands’ founder Yat Siu wrote in a statement. “[The Axie Infinity team] is as passionate about NFTs, blockchain gaming, and digital property rights as we are here at Animoca Brands.”
On March 30th, a hacker attacked Axie Infinity’s Ronin Network and stole over $600M. Of course, the incident deeply affected the Axie Infinity founding team, as well as many of the players. In less than 48 hours, Sky Mavis promised to refund all victims of the breach while upgrading its security system.
At this moment, Sky Mavis received a whopping $150M fundraise from Binance, Dialectic, Paradigm, and more. The giant Animoca Brands was among the leading investors supporting Axie Infinity – just as they have in 2019.
When one community, such as Axie Infinity grows and prospers, the benefits extend to other participants in the wider ecosystem,” Yat Siu added. “We need to grow this space together, and that means we need to be there for each other.”
