NFT play-to-earn game Splinterlands just announced the release of a new NFT collection, featuring Waka Flocka Flame. In the partnership with LOAK, the rapper’s exclusive drop sold out almost immediately. This collection has a total of 1,000 NFTs, but only half of which were sold on Splinterlands yesterday. The other half will be released during Phase 2, through AtomicHub. Phase 2 will focus more on the fashion portion of the collection.
Phase 1 saw the Waka Spiritblade NFTs sold for 5,000 Splintershards (SPS) and 500 vouchers. This is a clear privilege for users that are more active in Splinterlands. This is because players that stake SPS, the Splinterlands governance token, will receive daily vouchers in return.

Waka Spiritblade
Inside Splinterlands, the Waka Spiritblade card is a MAX level Death Summoner that has a 3 Mana cost. In addition, it empowers all allies with the POISON ability. This ability provides a 50% chance of them poisoning enemy monsters on hit, dealing additional damage to them at the beginning of each round. 20 of the 500 successful owners received the gold foil cards instead of the other 480 regular foil cards. The selections were randomly drawn during the sale yesterday.
Besides being part of Splinterlands gameplay, the NFTs are also usable through augmented reality in Snapchat. This is one of the first instances where we see an in-game NFT asset doubling as a fashion NFT collectible. This is where the LOAK partnership comes into play. In Snapchat, the NFT becomes a wearable Waka Flocka headpiece, and owners can flex it on the app.
Adding a character in the middle of a heavily played game is definitely challenging as it may affect the balance of the cards. Kudos to the team for this collaboration for introducing this surprise to the P2E game.
