Japanese digital entertainment company Square Enix is teaming up with The Sandbox in bringing the medieval fantasy RPG Dungeon Siege to the metaverse. Thanks to this two-part collaborative project, the game will come to life in the decentralized virtual world.

Square Enix and The Sandbox Partnership for Dungeon Siege
Basically, Square Enix will develop the Dungeon Siege LAND on its virtual estate. Then, players can take part in interactive RPG experiences, and learn how to construct unique Dungeon Siege adventures. Meanwhile, the second phase is for the roll-out of Voxel characters and items that players can add to their own experiences.
Hideaki Uehara, Director of Business Development of Square Enix, shared what motivated them to expand their presence to the metaverse. He said, “Dungeon Siege has always been about inspiring adventure. Entering The Sandbox metaverse to empower players to craft their own personal adventures opens an exciting new chapter for the franchise.”
Dungeon Siege captured the attention of Animoca Brands’ subsidiary because of its positive reputation and traction. The RPG has sold over 1.7 million copies mainstream. So the narrative following a young farmer and his companions facing down an invading force was a huge hit!
We can expect more strategic moves from Square Enix to harness emerging technologies. After all, the company announced that blockchain is their core strategy this 2022. This means that they would be doubling down on metaverse and NFT initiatives.
